It’s getting close to summer. Hopefully, you’ve already done your spring cleaning. Now it’s time for the last item on your list; organize the garage. Here are 5 steps to have the best garage on the block.

1. Hang ‘em High: This has nothing to do with the 1968 western film. Use as much vertical space as you can when organizing your garage. Things like rakes, shovels, hedge trimmers, ladders and any other yard work tools can easily hang from a hanging rack mounted to the wall. You can also purchase mounting racks for the ceiling to hang things like bicycles.
2. Shelve Everything: There are lots of great shelving units you can purchase to organize tools, car cleaning products, shoes, and whatever else you are looking to store. Totes offer a cheap alternative. While you are shelving everything, it is also very helpful to label any drawers or cabinets that close.
3. Take it All Out: It can be a good idea to remove everything from your garage before you begin organizing. This is for the same reason the game of Tetris starts without any blocks on the screen. Having a clean slate to start will help you come up with better solutions.
4. Apples with Apples: As much as you can, it is helpful to keep items of the same type together. Humans love to compartmentalize things into separate categories, and organizing the garage is a useful and appropriate time to do it.
5. Purposeful Planning: You don’t have to use your garage for the usual purposes. It can become a workroom for just about any hobby or profession. Remember that many of the most successful companies in the world started in someone’s garage. Dream big.
